What is Slack Wax?

Slack wax is a mixture of wax and 5 to 30% oil. This material is prepared in the refinery from lube cut, which is a type of crude oil waste. In the process of producing solid paraffin, slack wax enters the production line as the raw material. Then it is degreased and decolorized and converted into the final product, paraffin wax.

The oil obtained in this process is also converted into another product called Foots Oil or Residue Wax, which has many industrial uses. Slack wax has a flash point above 200 degrees Celsius and an initial boiling point above 280 degrees Celsius. According to the UN GHS criteria, this product is not flammable, but because it contains oil, it burns like fuel.

This material is also yellow or brown in color and is semi-solid at room temperature and is best stored at a temperature of about 80 degrees Celsius and away from oxidizing agents.

How is Slack Wax Produced?

Slack wax is actually a raw wax that is produced by cooling and distilling filtered and pressed paraffin. The process of processing slack wax is that this product is first deoiled in a heated chamber by a process called “sweating”. In this way, by slowly increasing the temperature of the solid wax, the oily parts with the lowest melting point are first removed.

Then wax with successively higher melting ranges and lower oil contents remain. When the sweating operation is complete, the remaining slack wax and solid paraffin with a low melting point and less oil are obtained.

Types of Slack Wax

Slack Wax produced is divided into two grades, light and heavy, based on the method of cooling and distillation.

1- Light Slack Wax

Light Grade Slack Wax is a mixture of paraffin wax and 10% petroleum. This material is yellow or light brown in color with a mild odor and its melting point is about 57 degrees Celsius and melts easily. Light Grade Slack Wax is used as a raw material for making many products such as matches, large candles, etc., the most important of which is paraffin wax. This product is packaged in new or used 180 kg drums or ISO tanks (flexi tanks). It is worth noting that 110 barrels of Slack wax can be loaded in each 20-foot container, and about 20 tons of items can be loaded in ISO tanks and flexi tanks.

2- Heavy Slack Wax

Heavy Slack Wax is the raw material of paraffin wax and is darker than light Slack Wax. It is mostly obtained from lubricating oil which has a melting point up to 68°C and also has an oil content up to 35%. Heavy Slack Wax is used in wax emulsion, as an adhesive and waterproofing in artificial woods, in anti-rust products, in industrial lubricants, in protecting feet from dirt or grass.

This product is packed in metal and plastic bags. Also, it can be packed in customized package referring to the customer’s order, such as jumbo bags and carton boxes.
