Slack Wax Supplier
Slack wax supplier is very important for paraffin wax making and using in other industrial uses, due to relevant parameters in quality and also in price for end users.
What is Slack Wax?
Slack wax is a substance composed of wax and oil that is a by-product of motor oil refineries and is the raw material for paraffin production. This product is obtained in the process of producing motor oils from a substance called lube cut, which is a waste product of oil.
In the process of producing paraffin, slack wax is fed into the production system as a feedstock and after performing processes such as deoiling and decolorization, it is converted into the final product, namely paraffin wax.
The oil obtained in this process is also converted into another product called foot oil or residue wax, which has many industrial uses. Slack wax is solid and is produced in a yellow to light cream color range.
This material is divided into light and heavy grades based on its melting point. The number of carbon chains between 50 and 52 is called light grade and the number of carbon chains between 53 and 55 is called heavy grade.
Other physical and chemical characteristics of this product include high amounts of paraffin, high flash point, light color, and non-staining properties. Paraffin was discovered in the 19th century by a German scientist named Carl von Reichenbach. This happened when he was working on increasing the efficiency and purification of oil compounds in the petrochemical industry. Because paraffin burned much cleaner and more reliably than common oils, it was used in the candle industry.
The discovery of paraffin gave a new boom to candle production, meat packaging, and oil production industries in the early 20th century. Paraffin wax and microcrystalline wax are obtained from petroleum products. These types of waxes can be recovered and offered in a wide range of desired physical characteristics.
Most manufacturers offer two distinct types of petroleum waxes: paraffins, which are characterized by large, shaped crystals. and microcrystalline waxes, which are higher melting waxes with small, irregular crystals. Microcrystalline waxes contain significant branched and cyclic proportions of saturated hydrocarbons as well as normal alkanes. Wax manufacturers also classify waxes by purity.
Fully-refined paraffin wax has less than 0.5 percent oil, and fully refined microcrystalline wax has less than 0.3 percent oil. Also, “slack wax,” which is the raw material for paraffin production, has a weight percentage of 3% to over 35% oil. Paraffin wax produced from petroleum products is necessarily a mixture of normal alkanes and isoalkanes without esters, acids, etc., which are found in animal waxes and vegetable-based waxes.
Synthetic waxes entered the market 50 years ago. Polyethylene waxes are low molecular weight polyethylenes with wax-like properties and are obtained by polymerization under high or low pressure. Such waxes have the same basic structures, but in different production processes, products with different properties are obtained, which have an important impact on the product’s uses.
Types of Slack Wax
Slack wax is categorized mainly based on its oil content and melting point. The two primary types are:
1. Light Slack Wax
-
Contains a higher percentage of oil (typically 10–30%)
-
Softer in texture
-
Ideal for applications in rubber, textile, and polishing industries
2. Heavy Slack Wax
-
Lower oil content (5–15%)
-
Higher melting point
-
Suitable for producing fully refined paraffin wax, candles, and board sizing
Both light and heavy slack wax supplied by Faragam Co. undergo strict quality checks to ensure suitability for downstream industries.
Applications of Slack Wax
Slack wax plays a significant role as a raw material in multiple sectors. Some of its common applications include:
Candle Manufacturing
One of the largest uses of slack wax is in the production of candles. After further refining, it produces paraffin wax that ensures smooth burning and longer shelf life.
Rubber and Tire Industry
Slack wax is used as a processing aid and softener in the rubber industry, helping to improve flexibility and durability.
Packaging and Board Sizing
Paperboard and packaging industries use slack wax as a water-resistant coating, improving the strength and moisture barrier of cartons.
Polishes and Coatings
Slack wax is a base ingredient in shoe polish, furniture polish, and surface coatings, giving products their desired shine and finish.
Textile and Match Industries
In textiles, slack wax is applied for yarn lubrication, while in match industries, it is used for coating match sticks.
